Airbus, Radmor and Thales Alenia Space are joining forces to build a geostationary military communications satellite for Poland that is part of that country’s push to enhance its national security space architecture.

“This geostationary satellite project will embody the highest standards of resilience, cybersecurity, and anti-jamming technologies, reflecting our commitment to strengthening European defense sovereignty,” Thales Alenia Space CEO Hervé Derrey said in a statement.

The work between the partners goes beyond the spacecraft and will include mission control and other ground infrastructure, they said in an April 20 statement after the signing the partnership. It was signed during a visit by French President Emanuel Macron to Poland.

The companies did not disclose a contract value or launch schedule.

The deal underscores how governments, even as they pursue low-Earth-orbit proliferated communication capabilities, still see value in having some larger satellites in geostationary orbit.

For Radmor, the Polish military radio provider that is part of the WB Group, the program expands activities into space. “Today’s battlefield is already closely integrated with space infrastructure; therefore, extending Radmor’s competencies into satellite communications ensures seamless, secure, and resilient connectivity across all operational domains,” business CEO Bartłomiej Zając said.

Poland has also been investing in building up its military Earth observation capabilities with investments in the ability to access electro-optical and radar images.
