Lockheed began work on the X-Wing high-speed rotorcraft in the mid-1970s, and Sikorsky was selected to demonstrate the stopped-rotor concept using its S-72 rotor systems research aircraft. The X-Wing had a circulation-control rotor designed to be stopped and locked in forward flight to form an X-shaped wing. The demonstrator was rolled out in 1986, but the complexity of the rotor system led to the program's cancellation and the X-Wing never flew. (Photo: NASA Dryden Flight Research Center)
