    • Advanced Short Takeoff /Vertical Landing

      Graham Warwick
Studies of a supersonic advanced short takeoff and vertical landing (ASTOVL) successor to the AV-8 Harrier began in 1983 as a joint U.S.-U.K. program. The ASTOVL program identified the shaft-driven lift fan as a promising approach, and ultimately led to Lockheed Martin's X-35 Joint Strike Fighter concept demonstrator, which in 2001 became the first aircraft to perform a short takeoff, supersonic dash and vertical landing on the same flight.
