AvWeek Wins Boeing Decade Award Plus Safety, Defense and Space Laurels Veteran Aviation Week & Space Technology avionics editor Phil Klass was honored by the Royal Aeronautical Society Monday night, accepting the Boeing Decade of Excellence trophy at the 1998 Aerospace Journalist of the Year Awards ceremony. Philip Whiteman took the Aerospace Journalist of the Year title for his story "Russ Snadden and Black Six" in the UK's Pilot Magazine. Aviation Week, in a Titanic-style sweep, took three category awards: Mike Dornheim, for safety reporting; Bill Scott, for the best defense submission; and Joseph Anselmo in the Space category. Susan Young, of Overhaul & Maintenance, won a fourth award for the Aviation Week group in the maintenance category. Credit also goes to James Gilbert's Pilot Magazine, which collected two category awards in addition to Whiteman's win-James Allan, for avionics, and Bernard Chabbert, for business aircraft. Other awards went to: Paul Duffy, Air Transport World, for air show coverage; Tom Ballantyne, Orient Aviation, for air transport; Lois Jones, Airline Business, for business and financial reporting; David Baker, Air International, for propulsion; Paul Copping, Aircraft Technology, Engineering & Maintenance, for regional aircraft; and Bruce Dorminey, Financial Times, for technology, systems and components. Special thanks are due to BFGoodrich, which undertook to provide airfreight for the winners' carry-on-limit-busting "Bronze Budgie" kestrel trophies. By Bill Sweetman | ||||||
