Another Civilian-to-Military Tale as Smiths FMS Moves to Navy E-6s

Smiths' advanced flight management system is to migrate from the flightdeck of the Boeing 737, on which it is standard fit, to the flight decks of U.S. Navy carriers, in cockpits of carrier-born, E-6 Intruder reconnaissance and radar-jamming aircraft. Boeing has awarded Smiths Industries an $11-million contract to supply the system, off-the-shelf, to modernize the cockpits of the USN Intruders. They will be supplied, beginning in July 2000, from the British company's U.S. factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
