Scandinavian Skyways May Join Other Regionals with Jets
Skyways, the SAS-affiliated regional based at Stockholm-Arlanda, may be
the next European carrier to bite the regional-jet bullet. Enplanements
have increased 16% in the first six months, during which Skyways acquired
Airborne AB, a smaller regional carrier. Revenues, meanwhile, were up 26%
in the first half while profits increased 76% compared to the same 1997
period. The carrier, with a fleet of previously owned Saab 340s, has seen
a three-fold increase in passengers over the past five years and now serves
more Swedish destinations than any other airline. "The rate of increase
in the Swedish domestic market will not be as great in the future,"
said president Jan Palmer. "Instead we intend to focus on a number
of new international routes. At present, we are evaluating possible routes
with Gothenburg as a hub. These, in turn, will require us to complement
our fleet with jet aircraft," Palmer said. Although a decision has
not been made, sources close to the airline said up to four ERJ145 50-seaters
are under strong consideration. | ||||||
