Allied's APU Joins the 728JET family

AlliedSignal has won a contract to supply the Fairchild Aerospace 728JET family with an integrated environmental control system and the RE220FD auxiliary power unit.

The contract could be worth US$1 billion to US$2 billion to AlliedSignal.

The ECS consists of the bleed air system, air conditioning system, cabin pressure control system and associated high-pressure ducting with bleed air leak detection. AlliedSignal is also responsible for avionics cooling, and for air distribution and low-pressure cabin ducting.

Normalair-Garrett Ltd., a UK-based joint venture between AlliedSignal and GKN Westland, will act as ECS lead on the project. NGL has provided ECSs for the 228, 328 and 328JET.

NGL will work with Parker-Abex for the hydraulic systems. NGL will provide the reservoirs, filter manifolds and oil coolers, and will support Parker-Abex in system definition and integration.

"Fairchild Aerospace selected the RE220 APU because of its high reliability, broad-range performance for 50- to 110-seat applications, low noise signature and easy maintenance," said AlliedSignal commercial auxiliary power VP Tom Johnson.

"We have accumulated more than 12,000 hours of testing on the RE220 with planned service on four new commercial aircraft," he said. The RE220 has been picked for the Bombardier Global Express, Gulfstream GV, and Canadair Regional Jet.
The APU will provide bleed air and electrical power on the ground for engine starting. It will operate throughout the aircraft's flight envelope.
