AlliedSignal Launches Global Star 2100

AlliedSignal has launched its Global Star 2100 flight management system, a navigation computer that combines a multi-channel GPS receiver with a proprietary global navigation database and multi-function control, as well as a 5.5-inch diagonal color display. Data can be loaded through a front access PCMCIA slot or customized through the keypad. Operators can create and store routes in the Global Star 2100, and worldwide database updates are available through AlliedSignal subscription services.

The Global Star 2100 is a plug-in replacement for the GNS-XL and can be configured in a single or dual synchronized FMS operation. It provides data for positioning, en route navigation, remote radio tuning and SIDs/STARs terminal procedures. Dual pathways are provided for anticipated features such as WAAS, LAAS, color weather and terrain graphics.

The new FMS meets current European BRNAV and forthcoming PRNAV standards, and, in a dual configuration, is capable of required navigation performance (RNP-10) for oceanic remote operations using GPS as sole navigation. It has the ability to fly ARINC 424 leg types and complies with TSO C129a, C115b and FAA Notice 8110.60.

AlliedSignal said the Global Star 2100 can be integrated with the company's enhanced ground proximity warning system. In this configuration, pilots will have a moving-map terrain display on the FMS.

The EGPWS will compare the GPS position with the Global Star 2100 proprietary terrain database and issue warnings of possible terrain conflict up to 60 seconds in advance. Displayed on the FMS or coupled to a compatible EFIS, the display depicts moving terrain in varying color intensities representing terrain altitude and distance. Warnings will be audible and visual.

First units have been selected for installation on the de Havilland DHC-8-400. Initial installation is scheduled for January 1999.
