Bizjet Airbags on the Way?

A combination aircraft passenger seatbelt and airbag system is expected to be available within the year, according to its developer, Phoenix-based AmSafe, a leading supplier of aircraft seatbelt and personal restraint systems.

The airbag, designed to deploy during impacts up to 16 g's, inflates away from the seated passenger, making it "safe for passengers of any age or size," claims Bill Hagen, AmSafe general manager. Hagen says airbag belts will look and feel similar to current safety belts. It is folded into a sheath on the fixed half of the seatbelt. The airbag's propellent is stored under the seat. The entire system weighs less than 1.5 pounds installed and can be retrofitted on any aircraft seat in about 30 minutes, according to Hagen.

Initially, the system will be available for new widebody aircraft, followed by systems for business aircraft. Pricing had not been finalized at press time, but it is expected to be in the $1,000 range.

AmSafe is promoting its seatbelt airbag as a means to significantly reducing head injuries during survivable crashes. In addition to the injury itself, AmSafe says safety statistics show that head trauma often leaves passengers stunned or unconscious. Unable to exit the aircraft, they may be overcome by smoke or fire," explained Hagen.
