Global Express Makes First Farnborough Appearance

Bombardier's Global Express is making its first appearance at Farnborough this year. The firm has 80 firm orders for the large-cabin, long-range business jet. At present, 12 aircraft are in final assembly.

The Global Express was certified by Transport Canada five weeks ago and Bombardier anticipates FAA/JAA certification "shortly," according to Michael Graff, head of Bombardier's business aircraft division, paving the way for initial customer deliveries in late 1998. Post-certification issues include approval of certain autopilot modes and flight into known icing conditions.

Graff also reported that the Global Express simulator will have Level C approval in time to train flight crews prior to aircraft deliveries to customers. Level D certification is scheduled for next year.

The firm delivered 41 business aircraft in the first six months of its 1998-1999 fiscal year and is on track to deliver 110 business jets by the end of fiscal 1998 (January 31, 1999). The tally includes 38 wide-body Challenger 604 aircraft.
