ICELANDERS LAUNCH NEW AIRLINE OPERATING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
AT FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL '98.

Air Atlanta Icelandic, one of the world's largest wet-leasing carriers, together with Taeknival hf, one of Iceland's largest software companies, are launching Albatross, a total airline operating management system for the smaller carrier. The system will be on show in public for the first time at Farnborough International '98 in hall 1 stand E27, (September 7-13, 1998)

Albatross was hatched some ten years ago by Air Atlanta Icelandic staff as a rudimentary programme to keep track of some aspects of the airline's operations in Saudi Arabia. As with all programmes it has been developed and modified over the years in the light of experience with more and more features being added.

The system is operational at Air Atlanta Icelandic's stations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester in England; Madrid, Spain; Cologne, Germany; and the head office near Reykjavik, Iceland. The airline operates 18 aircraft for a variety of airlines, sometimes for short periods, in various parts of the world plus its own charter services from Iceland.

The airline went to Taeknival to provide professional computer expertise to ensure that the programme conformed to modern standards and could be run on many different platforms. Programming in Progress 4GL makes it possible to run Albatross on almost any platform, such as Windows 95 and NT, UNIX and AS400. There is a choice of databases such as Oracle, Progress, DB2, etc.

The system is designed to allow many outstations to have control of input of relevant data with the ability for head office to have various reports. Data can be transferred automatically between stations or just to and from head office. Any connected station can access any information or, if necessary, certain data can have limited accessibility.

The most frequently used page shows the sectors being flown by a variable number of aircraft. Clicking on a rotation brings up a window that shows the details and timings of the flight, aircraft and crew. Clicking on the aircraft can provide complete records of operations and maintenance. Clicking on the name of individual crew members can provide a complete record of their status, including personal and professional details down to vaccinations and the items of uniform issued.

The system will run crew rosters and aircraft scheduling, providing operations officers with a live rotation plan of the current operation over four hours or four days as required. In addition it will automatically check itself for input errors.

Importantly, from the management point of view, the system is designed to comply with Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) requirements and it can provide reports to the standards of most aviation authorities. If necessary those reports can be transmitted automatically.

Taeknival is a US$36 million turnover company, one of Iceland's largest computer companies, employing 233 people including 60 in the software division alone. It has taken responsibility for the sales, installation and support of the Albatross system.

Air Atlanta Icelandic, a privately owned company based in Iceland and identified by Business Week as one of Europe's fastest growing companies, currently operates 15 widebody Boeing 747 and Lockheed L1011 aircraft and three Boeing 737s from stations in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Saudi Arabia as well as Iceland.
