Metrum-Datatape Flight Recorder Shown to Take a Beating. . .Shown Here. . .too

A Metrum-Datatape harsh-environment digital flight recorder has completed test flights at the U.S. Navy's Patuxent River facility mounted in an F/A18 Hornet's nose. It was subjected to high-g maneuvering and all the stresses imposed in fast-jet operations from carriers, with catapult launches and arrested landings. A similar 32HE recorder has also completed preliminary testing aboard an F117 stealth fighter, mounted in the bomb bay. The aircraft was flown with the bomb bay doors open, subjecting the recorder to what the company says was "an extreme environment and tremendous acoustic noise." A 32HE recorder can be seen on stand D17 in Hall 1.
