ILA 2000 Spotlights New Euro-Giants;
Seeks Cycle With Paris, Farnborough

Dr. Hans Eberhard Birke, BDLI's MD

ILA 2000 is bigger and better than ever, and its success will force Farnborough and Paris to consider including it in a three-year cycle for an annual European Aerospace show. That's the belief of Dr. Hans Eberhard Birke, managing director of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI).

"Companies will realize the importance of exhibiting in the very center of a dynamic European market," he told Show News.
Indeed, many more have. The number exhibiting this year has risen more than 75 to 900, from 38 countries with Brazil, Ireland, Uzbekhistan and South Africa represented for the first time. "We are becoming larger, and more international," he said.

The Russian presence is 25% greater, underscoring ILA's theme of "East-West Gateway," and Birke noted advance registrations had increased significantly due to the German government moving to Berlin from Bonn over the last year.

The number of aircraft on display will top 315, including more than 50 helicopters and 20 corporate aircraft. Trade visitors are expected to at least match the 82,000 who attended in 1998.

In comparison, February's Asian Aerospace attracted 950 exhibitors, 70 aircraft, and one quarter of the registered trade visitors at 22,000.
But it is not Singapore that ILA is competing against: Farnborough is a much bigger threat since moving its date from September to July.
"We have felt no impact at all from them trying to squeeze us out, except for Boeing Commercial, which is going there instead of ILA," said Dr. Birke.

He expressed disappointment and surprise at Boeing's decision, especially as that company has stated it expects to win 46 orders a year from German airlines alone between now and 2018.

A strong selling point for ILA is its program of 60 on-site conferences and meetings, which this year includes the NATO Air Force Armaments Group (June 5-8), the Airbus ministers' meeting (June 6), and the meeting of the European Air Chiefs (June 5-8).
