AlliedSignal Offers Single-Display
Safety Information
AlliedSignal has unveiled two new Bendix/King multi-function displays
(MFDs) that enable pilots to view a variety of safety information
on a single display.
The Bendix/King KMD550 is a four-inch-high, full-color MFD designed
for non-radar-equipped piston and light turbine aircraft, while
the KMD850 is designed for radar-equipped piston, turboprop and
turbofan aircraft.
The KMD850 offers all the functions of the KMD550, with the addition
of both a digital and analog weather radar interface capability.
Both units will be available in the first quarter of 2000.
Both units may be upgraded "without running out of processing
power," says AlliedSignal business and general aviation avionics
VP John Murphy. "Pilots will be able to customize their display
in accordance with the capability of their aircraft, as well as
add additional capability in the future," he says.
Both units will provide a moving-map function that displays airports,
VORs, NDBs and special use airspace, including altitude limits,
as well as terrain elevations and other features. Interface with
data-linked weather, traffic sensors, lightning detection, GPS,
EGPWS and other systems is also possible.
Separately, AlliedSignal has introduced Integrated Hazard Avoidance
Systems (IHAS) to be displayed on the two respective MFDs. IHAS
displays textual and real-time Nexrad weather radar information
via datalink, active flight plan traffic information via a mode
'S' datalink, and terrain warnings from an EGPWS. Delivery of
IHAS components will begin in the first quarter of 2000, with
complete system availability following later in the year.
