Teledyne Expands In-Flight Communications Options

Teledyne is increasing its in-flight communications presence for business aviation with an agreement to supply TeleLink data link systems as an option for customers of the Boeing Business Jet.
With TeleLink, BBJ operators can conveniently access a number of air traffic and flight management services, including pre-departure clearances, real-time weather, digital ATIS and TWIP (automatic terminal information system and terminal weather information for pilots), and messaging. An optional weather graphics package is also available.

In other in-flight communications news, Teledyne said that its MagnaStar Digital Air Telephone System has now been installed in 1,500 aircraft. Available for existing aircraft or as a factory-installed option, MagnaStar operates on Airfone's digital cell network in the continental U.S., Mexico and Southern Canada.

MagnaStar systems can now transmit and receive data at 9,600 BPS as a result of recent enhancements to the Airfone network. The company says this is the fastest airborne data rate currently available.
A derivative of GenStar, the airborne telephone system Teledyne designed and manufactured for airliner use on the Airfone system, MagnaStar is being installed at a rate of 40 systems per month. The company expects 1,700 MagnaStar systems to be in use by early 2000.
