The Legion of Honor:
GE’s Bill Clapper Receives
France’s Highest Civilian Award
Bill Clapper, executive vp of CFM International, has been awarded France’s highest civilian honor, the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, CFMI is announcing here today.
Created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to reward individuals for military service to the country, today’s Legion of Honor is also presented to men and women of any nationality for outstanding achievements in military or civilian life. In Clapper’s case, the award comes from his long-standing contributions to the development of commercial aviation and furthering the successful cooperation between the U.S. and France, according to CFMI, a 50/50 joint company of Snecma, a division of Safran, and GE Transportation.
“Safran was pleased to nominate Bill to the Legion of Honor,” said Jean-Paul Bechat, CEO of Safran, in presenting Clapper the award for the French Republic and President Jacques Chirac.
“He has played an integral role in the ongoing success of CFM International and his legacy will touch the product line for decades to come.”
Clapper joined GE in 1979. He took over advanced technology marketing there in 1985, became manager of business planning and market development in 1990 and assumed his current position as head of the CFM56 project office in 1995. He serves “as the primary interface between GE and Snecma,” CFMI says.John Croft
