Qatar First to Offer Live TV Broadcasts

Qatar Airways will be the first international airline to offer live TV broadcasts to its passengers. The airline has selected Lufthansa Technik to install Rockwell Collins’ Tailwind 560 compact satellite TV antenna and associated equipment on its 15 A330s, and integrate the TV function into the existing inflight entertainment (IFE) system. Lufthansa Technik has already installed live TV aboard a VIP A340 and has helped install inflight Internet services aboard Lufthansa’s fleet.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa Technik Engine Services unit in Hamburg has signed up to take over all engine maintenance for Qatar’s 17-strong A320 fleet. The German company will support the fleet’s V2500 engines for 10 years under a total engine support contract. Together, the two deals are worth $100 million to Lufthansa Technik. — Bill Sweetman
