China Gets on Board the Dreamliner

Boeing is placing more work on advanced programs in China following the signature of a new industrial cooperation deal for the 787 airliner. Under the auspices of China Aviation Industry Corporation 1 (AVIC I), the Chengdu and Shenyang companies will supply key components for Boeing’s Dreamliner — the first time that AVIC I companies have participated in a major international aircraft project as sole suppliers from the beginning. The Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group will build 787 rudders, while the Shenyang Aircraft Corp. will supply the leading edge of the vertical fin.

AVIC I and Boeing already have a good track record together, with Chinese firms contributing to a range of Boeing products, including the 737NG, 747, 757 and 767. AVIC I has made a heavy investment in manufacturing facilities and infrastructure; other Chinese firms working with Boeing include the Xi’an Aircraft Co. and the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Factory. Chengdu is perhaps better known as the builder of China’s J-10 advanced fighter, while Shenyang is currently building a large fleet of Sukhoi Su-27s (J-11s) for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force.
