It’s Not Over Till It’s Over for CSeries

When IAE walked away from the CSeries airliner program, Bombardier went to Plan B and opened formal negotiations with Pratt & Whitney Canada. Right now, there is no Plan C, says Bombardier’s Gary Scott. But issues clearly remain. “We have only been talking to Pratt & Whitney Canada for a few weeks. Obviously we have to work through the commercial terms, but we are confident that PWC can deliver the performance we require to get a product that meets requirements. We are looking for 20,000 or 21,000 pounds thrust, with growth to 23,000. We want a competitive SFC — a 10% improvement — plus weight and bypass ratio improvements, to contribute to our overall 15% cut in operating costs.” With a program launch planned for this autumn, Scott says, “We want to have our supplier agreements in place at launch, but they don’t all have to be ready, and that includes the engines.” —Robert Hewson
