A Poser from Finmeccanica as It Ponders Who to Buy Next?

Finmeccanica wants to take a piece out of its European rivals, maybe a big piece.

Chairman Pier Francesco Guarguaglini has indicated that he is more than ready to pick up the 5.7% stake in Thales that Dassault is preparing to dispose of. “We have always been interested in consolidating European industry and we have had contact with Thales before now. Dassault is no longer interested in sustaining its investment in avionics and if the new French government takes an interest in this issue, then so will we. The Italian government is completely willing to cooperate with France on defense issues.”

But Guarguaglini also indicated he is looking at even bigger fish than Thales. “We are interested in some elements of BAE Systems, and if they go on the market then we will buy them. If that were to arise, then I’m sure with our good relationship we’d be the first ones they’d call.” —Robert Hewson
