Ontario Knife Chosen for Army Pilot Survival

New York State’s Ontario Knife (in Hall 4 here) is talking up its selection by the U.S. Army to supply a pilot survival knife said to represent the first technological advance in U.S. military survival knives since the 1940s. Ontario’s ASEK “aircrew survival system” includes a strap cutter that allows restraints to be cut with one hand (an Army requirement). The knife itself has a 5-inch carbon steel blade (hardness Rc 50-54) said to be able to make a 36-inch cut in aircraft aluminum without re-sharpening. “Aircrew will be able to use the knife as a survival tool, for preparing food and shelter, and as a defensive weapon,” the company says. Holes in the serrated blade allow it to be lashed to a pole to make a spear.
