Tornado Accord With BAE Systems Could Revolutionize Life for RAF
BAE Systems and the Royal Air Force (RAF) are negotiating a new total support and upgrade package that could give a huge boost to Britain’s entire Tornado fleet. The ATTAC (Availability Transformation: Tornado Aircraft Contract) is a whole-aircraft availability concept that would see BAE Systems providing aircraft, spares, technical support and training to the RAF while upgrading the Tornado to meet future requirements. The ATTAC concept was given the green light by Britain’s Ministry of Defence on May 25. If approved next year as planned it would concentrate on five key areas: the historically troublesome AI24 radar of the Tornado F.Mk 3; an incentivized support contract for aircraft power systems that aims to save 35% on historic costs; a combined maintenance and upgrade facility at RAF Marham; the replacement of 85% of LRUs within one hour; and delivering between 20% to 40% savings on traditional support arrangements.
