At Last, an Upgraded LAAS

The FAA has awarded a $4.5 million contract modification to Honeywell for the company to upgrade the Category 1 Local Area Augmentation System with a new set of system integrity algorithms. Honeywell’s SLS-3000 Beta test LAAS ground system is functioning at Memphis International Airport. The LAAS system monitors the accuracy of GPS signals and transmits a correction (augmentation) signal to aircraft. The FAA has backed off its plans to go forward with LAAS systems at the moment as it works on a technology evaluation to determine if the system can provide suitable integrity.
