A380 Parts and Service from ‘Spairliners’

Lufthansa Technik and Air France Industries last week formed a 50/50 joint venture aimed at providing component support for the 25 A380s on order by Air France and Lufthansa, as well as for the A380s of any other operator. In addition to component support, the new company, dubbed “Spairliners,” will provide operators with overhaul and repair management of spare parts pools and the related logistics.

Spairliners will acquire and manage its own pool of A380 components, providing guaranteed component availability at optimal costs, says Lufthansa Technik. The practice will help not only small fleets, says the company, but also the large A380 fleets at major airlines, leading to substantial economies of scale in integrated component support and permanent access to spares inventory. Component repair work will take place at Air Frances’ new component overhaul facility based near Orly Airport and at Lufthansa Technik’s component shop in Hamburg.

Spairliners will operate as a standalone company starting with seven employees, including a CEO appointed by Air France and a COO appointed by Lufthansa Technik. Corporate headquarters, handling material management, customer service and AOG support, will be located in Hamburg, while an operations center that manages central stock location, logistics platform and logistics management will be located in Paris. -- John Croft
