Tiny Turbomachine Makes Big Difference to JSF

 The first Pratt & Whitney F135 engine start for the Lockheed Martin F-35 JSF has been conducted using the novel gas turbine “turbomachine” that sits at the heart of the aircraft’s integrated power package (IPP). The IPP does the work of the previously separate auxiliary power system, emergency power system and engine starter/generator. Combining these functions in one unit makes a useful contribution to reducing the JSF’s overall weight.
