Widening its already extensive portfolio of CFM engine fan blade services, GKN Aerospace earlier this month received approval from Snecma Services to restore the overall length and midspan shrouds on the fan blades of the CFM56-5B engine. For operators the restoration work is critical to engine performance, as blade length and midspan shroud dimensions wear over time, decreasing engine capability. To restore the blades, GKN uses a combination of welding, machining and application of High Velocity Oxy Fuel tungsten carbide protective coatings. Aside from Snecma Services, GKN Aerospace is the only repair source for this type of work worldwide. The company has a wide range of approvals from commercial jet engine manufacturers, covering activities such as major composite and metallic off-aircraft component repair, radome repair and certification, and engine fan blade and component repair.
