Volvo Aero Demos Components of ‘Green’ Engine

Volvo Aero is bringing a breath of fresh air to this year’s show (Hall 2A, Stand D15). The company is showing off its engine-tested rear turbine frame, a product it developed as part of the European Union’s CLEAN (component validator for environmentally friendly aero engine) program. CLEAN is part of the EU’s $100 million Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Aero Engine (EEFAE) project aimed at cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and nitrous oxide emissions by 80% by 2020.

Other CLEAN work for the company included building the low-pressure turbine case and assembling the entire engine. In testing this past winter, Volvo Aero components performed well and the engine met all targets for performance and emissions, according to the company. To help validate technologies related to new thermodynamic cycles — such as intercooled, recuperated and geared fan cycles — Volvo Aero built the rear frame to handle higher temperatures than today’s jet engines can withstand.

In other news, Volvo Aero reports that it will design the engine outlet nozzle for the European Neuron unmanned combat air vehicle, in close cooperation with Saab and Dassault. Given the UCAV’s quest for a low signature from the exhaust, the nozzle is a key element in the design. The company also signed a $17 million agreement with Indonesian airline Lion Air to take responsibility for overhauling the engines in Lion Air’s fleet of MD-80s and assisting the airline with technical support and maintenance planning. — John Croft
