French Aerospace Companies Team to Trample Noise

Reducing the aircraft noise footprint around airports is at the heart of a new initiative by the French aerospace community. Called Iroqua (Initiative de recherche pour l’optimisation acoustique aeronatique), the effort is a teaming of the French aerospace research agency Onera, the national scientific research center (CNRS), Airbus, Dassault Aviation, Eurocopter and Snecma.

The French program is one aspect of a larger regional noise initiative launched by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (Acare) calling for the halving of perceived noise levels from aircraft by 2020. To meet that goal, researchers are pursuing two paths -- reducing noise generated by engines and airframes, and developing low-noise flight paths and flight procedures. Iroqua will focus on the latter, investing research in topics such as exhaust nozzle design, turbine speeds, bypass ratios and fuel mix ratios. Through Iroqua, French aerospace companies and research agencies will coordinate joint programs, coming up with shared, complimentary objectives. -- John Croft
