MAPL: A Leaf from Bell’s Book of Helicopter Enhancements
Pronounced maple (as in Canadian flag) MAPL is the core of Bell Helicopter’s future plans, indicating Modular, Affordable Product Line. First commercial fruits of this drive for advanced technology in 13 areas of helicopter design are available for view in the static display, where Bell has a mock-up of its forthcoming Model 429.
Already with 110 paid deposits, including several from emergency medical evacuation operators (which is why the mock-up here is thus kitted-out), the 429 is moving toward a design freeze later this year, followed by first flight in 2006 and certification for single-pilot VFR in the first half of 2007.
Seeking 2 dB below Stage 3 requirements, and compliance with stringent U.S. Forestry Department limitations, it will be marketed for $3.95 million, while the closely related Model 427 is maintained in production with a $2.8 million tag.
Bell’s next helicopter will have the full range of MAPL goodies, involving enhancements to engines and both rotors. As the 429’s cabin is designed to be either “de-plugged” or stretched, not give much of a clue is given to which way Bell will jump in about two years’ time. Paul Jackson
