Boeing Poised for Block III Apache Production
Final Congressional approval is awaited by Boeing Rotorcraft for Block III modernization to extend AH-64D Longbow Apache operating lives through 2030. At Le Bourget on Monday, Al Winn, Boeing vp of Apache programs, said Block III production would involve 284 AH-64Ds, to follow 821 AH-64As, and remanufacturing programs producing 232 AH-64Ds from $1.9 billion multiyear contracts from 1997-2002, and $2.3 billion for another 269 from 2002-2006.
Block III upgrades from 2010-2028 will involve open system avionics architecture, radar, and defensive aid system improvements to achieve better target detection, performance, maintenance and training. These contribute toward role-change capabilities to meet ground support rather than the original dedicated anti-armor requirements.
They will be combined with increased survivability, cost reductions and Level 4 multiple-UAV control capability (already starting flight tests), operated as an extended sensor suite using MD 500 Little Bird technology. Employing high-bandwidth data transfer, each Apache could control up to three UAVs over ranges of around 21 miles. The Little Bird UAV control technology consists of a kit package capable of installation in any other helicopter too.
Other proposed AH-64D enhancements include installation of uprated GE T700-714B engines in place of the current 1,890-shp -701Cs. John Fricker
