EMB F-5 Upgrades

The postponement of Forca Aerea Brasileira’s (FAB) plan to acquire new fighter aircraft under the F-X BR program has urged-on the upgrading of its Northrop F-5 fleet. The F-5BR prototype is flying, and the first production aircraft is due to be delivered to FAB for evaluation this month.

The upgrade includes new multimode radar, air refueling capability, three liquid-crystal cockpit displays, and a wide-angle HUD with night vision goggles compatibility. The aircraft are also fitted with datalink. “We are qualifying new weapons and new self-defense systems for the aircraft,” said Anastacio Katsanos, Embraer’s Defense Program supremo.

The FAB is to acquire more used F-5s to equip a third squadron. —Mike Vines
