Embraer Claims Greatest Recon Reliability

Embraer’s Aircraft Defense Programs chief Anastacio Katsanos claims that his company’s reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering aircraft (based on the rugged ERJ-145 regional jet) that are in use by the Brazilian Air Force over the Amazon region are the most reliable in the business.

It’s simply the best platform, averaging 98% reliability for our eight SIVAM (SIstema de Vigilancia de AMazonia) aircraft,” notes Katsanos. “The American AWACS or military Boeing 707 derivative’s figure is around 40%. If you take the Lockheed P-3 of the U.S. Navy, the figure is about 45% . So in the past the USAF and U.S. Navy have bought more aircraft because of reliability issues. Given our ERJ-145’s reliability, we can offer a smaller fleet — say seven to eight aircraft — to replace a 10-aircraft fleet.” —Mike Vines
