BAE Systems Regional Aircraft is considering two ‘special missions’ developments of its 146 jet fleet that will bring a touch of adventure and some routine slogging to the hard-working jets. Following a series of trials in September 2004 BAE is now working with Tronos Canada Inc to build a 146 Airtanker, or water bomber, to fight forest fires. Work on the aircraft (a 146-200) got underway in January and it will be flown before the end of the year to be available for the 2006 ‘fire season’ in the US. At the same time BAE is considering a relaunch for the 146QT (Quiet Trader) all-cargo variant, with a roller floor and new side cargo door. Thirty new-build 146QTs were produced before the original BAe 146 line was closed down and most now serve with TNT Express. BAE says it is considering an initial 10-aircraft conversion program (for an unidentified customer), with work on the first aircraft to begin early in 2006 if all goes well.
