Curtiss-Wright/Wiley Post/Braniff Hangar Is Being Rebuilt
A nonprofit group is planning to reconstruct the infamous
hangar where Curtiss-Wright advanced general aviation in Oklahoma in the late
1920s, where Wiley Post launched his round-the-world flights in the early 30s,
and where Braniff Airlines got its start.
Through the Curtis Wright/Wiley Post hangar project,
advocates for the project hope to rebuild the structure into an aviation
convention and banquet center; restaurant; pilot store outlet; and flight
school.
The group is currently raising funds for the 501.c3 project.
Considered a fire hazard in the 1960s, the hangar was saved from demolition by
a group of Oklahoma City pilots, who disassembled the structure and put it in
storage. C.H. Guernsey & Co. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, are providing the
architectural and engineering services for the reconstruction, and W.S.
Bowlware Construction will assemble the hangar in its new location on the
southwest corner of the Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City. The group hopes to
complete the hangar in time for the state of Oklahoma Centennial in 2007.
