CSSI, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based air traffic services
provider, has received the Charles E. Varnell Memorial Award for its
contributions to the successful implementation of the FAA's new domestic RVSM
standards from the Air Traffic Control Association. The DRVSM standards reduce
the required vertical separation of aircraft flying between 29,000 and 41,000
ft from 2,000 to 1,000 ft, enabling the U.S. to add six additional layers of
usable airspace. Named for a long-time supporter of the aviation industry, the
Varnell Award is given annually to a small business that has made a significant
contribution to the safety of the ATC system.
