Universal Avionics to Display New Offspring

Universal Avionics Systems Corporation's (UASC) recently certified, high-definition EFI-890R primary display unit will most likely be the headliner at Booth 3032 in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

John Hamby, new marketing and communications manager for the Tucson, Ariz.-based company, said most of the attention and briefings will deal with the 8.9-in. diagonal EFI-890R, which can be used as either a primary flight display (PFD) or navigation display (ND). The EFI-890R is targeted for the retrofit market, hence the R suffix.

Duncan Aviation's Battle Creek, Mich. facility has retrofitted the EFI-890R on a Challenger 601 owned by Universal founder, president and CEO, Hubert Naimer, who recently died in Vienna, Austria at the age of 82. His son J.L. "Ted" Naimer, who has worked with the company for over 30 years, will assume the position of president of UASX. Universal's Challenger will be on static display at Henderson Executive Airport (Space 18).

The EFI-890R is part of a four-panel suite of avionics being installed in the Challenger. The EFI-890R display will replace the altitude director indicator (ADI), the horizontal situational indicator (HSI), radar indicator, altimeter, vertical speed indicator (VSI), radio magnetic indicator (RMI) and airspeed indicator on older aircraft.

Other Universal products on display: the synthetic vision awareness system, Vision I, which allows the pilot to see the terrain ahead in a 3D format; Universal's soon-to-be certified Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) that will be embedded into Universal's flight management system (FMS); and the company's Terrain Alert Warning System (TAWS), which gives pilots a three-view of terrain.

More than 13,000 Universal Avionics FMS systems have been installed in commercial, regional, corporate and military aircraft.
