QinetiQ Has the Answers

What is QinetiQ? It's the new name for the British government's Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), handling non-nuclear research, technology, and test and evaluation establishments.

Except -- it's a little more complicated than that.

The British Ministry of Defence's 1998 Strategic Defence Review recommended a Public Private Partnership (PPP) as the best way of maximizing the strategic value and operational cost-effectiveness of the UK's defense research capabilities, so in 2001 QinetiQ plc was born. It incorporated the greater part of DERA, to make possible involvement by the private sector. The leftover DSTL remains part of the MoD and handles the most sensitive areas of research.

In December 2002 the Carlyle Group would become the MoD's strategic partner in QinetiQ, which is on course to become a leader in science and technology. The MoD retained a share in the business to ensure that the UK's defense and security interests continue to be protected. The future aim is to position QinetiQ for an Initial Public Offering, with the potential to become a globally recognized brand, and the world's leading technology-based solutions provider.

QinetiQ employs 7,000 scientists around the UK. Its HQ is here at Farnborough, hidden in the woods to the northwest of the airfield, and its boffins have their fingers in research pies covering "all aspects of everything," they claim.

Their portfolio of technologies offers businesses solutions in areas that include aviation, defense, space, health, information communication, electronics, security, automotive, energy, highways, traffic and rail.

"Where there are questions, we have answers," they say. "We adapt technology to meet high-level challenges, spearheading breakthroughs in industry."

QinetiQ is in Hall 1, Stand A19 and Chalet L1.
