 USMC Upgrades Litening Pods

Northrop Grumman is testing several upgrading features for the Litening AT targeting pod, to improve the operational flexibility of the pod. Among the features are the installation of video datalink, enabling positive target verification by ground troops before an attack. Other improvements include software improvements and the introduction of a 1,000x1,000 CCD sensor under development by RAFAEL, the original developer of the pod. The new features are expected to add over 30% improvement in range, specifically detection and identification of targets in daylight. Some 273 Litening pods have been delivered by Northrop Grumman to customers worldwide (of a total 323 pods ordered).
