Holy crap, where did all those Cessnas come from? Oh, they're gone. Oh no, here they are again. Windfarmsclusters of dozens of power-generating windmillscan have this effect on civil and military surveillance radars because the blade tips move at about the same speed as a small airplane, producing hundreds of false targets. In the UK, the RAF and Civil Aviation Authority are blocking two out of five windfarm applications because of this threat to air safety.
AMS, which produces the S511 military radar and commercial Watchman, has developed an electronic toolkit to analyze and eliminate windfarm interference, based on clutter-suppression technology in military radars. Before offering it for operational use, the company is working with government regulators and the British Wind Energy Association to demonstrate the tools on a radar in the field.
