EADS Tweaks Missile Warning Kit to Protect Danish F-16 Fighters
Denmark has asked EADS to modify the company's primarily missile warning sensor suite to alert air force F-16 crew about incoming missiles.
EADS's Defence Electronics arm has long built the Missile Launch Detection System (MILDS) for helicopters and fixed-wing transports, but the Danish deal represents the first foray for the electronic warfare kit into the sizeable F-16 market. The AAR-60(V)2 relies on passive, ultraviolet sensors to detect approaching missiles. The higher speeds of fighters have required modifications in the missile warning systems algorithms.
The Danish system is being integrated into the Terma AS pylon integrated dispenser system and the electronic combat integrated pylon system. Control of self-protection operations resides with the ALQ-213 electronic warfare management system. Terma will integrate the 30 equipment sets being purchased for the Danish F-16s. Terma and EADS will co-market the combined self-protection kit to other F-16 users.
