Airbus Stays Coy About 7E7
Airbus stays coy about what, if anything, it plans to do to fend off the 7E7. "We're not living in denial, as our competitor did with the A380," CEO Noel Forgeard said here on Monday. "There will be a product called the 7E7."
Chief commercial officer John Leahy says that, so far, "given
all Boeing's claims," the long-range 7E7-8 has "one or
2-percent lower seat-mile cost" than the older but larger A330-200.
"You can fly farther in the 7E7-8. We could extend the range
of the A330-200, but we're not sure-there are not all that many
customers who want to go 7,500 miles."
Forgeard adds that Airbus is "developing serious scenarios
for the next step in our 20-year strategy." Noting that faster
deliveries and the end of major investments in the A380 program
will leave the company with more financial and engineering resources
after 2006, Forgeard noted that Airbus "will react, and you
will hear about it in due course."
