Northrop Acquires Share of Scaled Composites

Northrop Grumman has acquired slightly less than a half-share in Scaled Composites, the Mojave, California prototype shop founded by visionary designer Burt Rutan. A Northrop Grumman executive disclosed the unpublicized deal during a question-and-answer session at a recent conference in the U.S. Northrop Grumman had already acquired Rutan's Proteus high-altitude research aircraft and had engaged Scaled Composites to build the X-47A Pegasus unmanned combat air vehicle demonstrator. Rutan has retained a majority share in the company, which will continue to perform work for other defense contractors. One area of particular interest to Northrop Grumman may be Rutan's involvement in small space vehicles, including Scaled's own Tier One suborbital vehicle -- unveiled in April -- and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency RASCAL small launcher program.
