I Am a Name, NOT a Number! Boeing 7E7 Becomes 'Dreamliner'

After counting half a million votes from 160 countries, Boeing announced the name of its forthcoming 7E7 airliner at the show yesterday. Choosing from a list of four suggestions listed on a joint Boeing and AOL Time Warner website, participants first rejected 'eLiner' and 'Stratoliner' (a historic precedent at Boeing), then in a two-horse final approved 'Dreamliner' by a margin of only 25,000 over 'Global Cruiser.'

After the christening ceremony by Rob Pollack, VP of branding at Boeing Commercial Airplanes Marketing, the Dreamliner was hailed as "The people's choice of a new name of a new airplane for a new world." Recalling the dictionary definition of a dream, Pollack noted it was most appropriate that this was " a visionary creation."

Clearly, 7E7 has not been consigned to the black plastic Binliner, like the Sonic Cruiser, which proved to be an unattainable Pipedreamliner.
