Dunlop Dynamometer Does Duty After Delay for Dramatic Development

The Birmingham, UK-based dynamometer of Dunlop Aerospace Braking Systems has completed a 6 million euro reengineering program to upgrade it to the most advanced facility anywhere for the testing of aircraft wheels and brakes. Used to validate the components manufactured by Dunlop Aerospace at nearby Coventry, the dynamometer now has increased load and mechanical energy capacity and can operate under radial loads of up to 150,000 lb and a mechanical inertia equivalent to 80,000 lb. This is unique within the aerospace industry and makes the equipment suitable for testing brakes and systems for the largest aircraft currently envisaged: the Airbus A380 and latest variants of the Boeing 777.
