Volvo Optimizes Rear Turbine Frame to Reduce Weight, Cost of New Engine

Volvo Aero has delivered the first optimized fabricated turbine rear frame for the new ANTLE (Affordable Near-Term Low Emission) engine, being developed by Rolls-Royce. The new assembly is designed to cut production costs by 30% and reduce weight by 10% for the new rear frame. An important tool in the optimization process is the extensive use of weld process modeling. Weld sequence and parameters were computer-optimized to minimize distortion and residual stresses. Volvo is a partner in the European engine demonstrator program EEFAE-Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Aero Engine-costing over 100 million euros.
