Honeywell has been selected to supply its RDR-4000M next generation
weather radar to upgrade the U.S. Air Force C-17s. The radar will
provide crews with much more accurate weather information than
previously available. The contract, awarded by Boeing on behalf
of the Air Force, is valued in excess of $30 million. The RDR-4000M
features 3D buffer processing that will eliminate ground clutter
without eliminating important weather information. The new radar
will also feature ground mapping and skin painting (detecting
other aircraft from radar returns.) The RDR-4000M is expected
to enter service with the Air Force in 2005.
