Honeywell Gains FAA Certificate for Euro-Compliant Transponder

As the show began, Honeywell announced it has been granted Federal Aviation Authority approval for its TRA-67A Mode S transponder, which meets new European requirements for additional aircraft surveillance capabilities being coordinated by Eurocontrol. "The increasingly congested airspace has resulted in new regulations to enhance air traffic surveillance data integrity and provide the means to increase air traffic management efficiency, with the additional benefit of improved safety," said Frank Daly, president, Air Transport Systems. Certification programs are under way at both Airbus and Boeing, and modification kits will be available to permit the transponders to meet what Eurocontrol officially calls Elementary and Enhanced Surveillance, as well as Automatic Dependent SurveillanceBroadcast (ADSB) datalink requirements. The latter, now undergoing pilot programs, will enhance traffic surveillance by enabling each aircraft to broadcast position information from its GPS.
