Lufthansa Technik and QinetiQ Join Forces in Cabin Systems

VIP and executive jet travel stands to get a hush kit for the cabin in the near future as the result of a memorandum of understanding between MRO Lufthansa Technik (LHT) and UK-based technology provider QinetiQ. In addition to helping LHT with various aspects of its cabin systems product line and newly certified wireless local area network, QinetiQ (pronounced "kinetic") is also working on a passive/active noise attenuation system that could make cabins significantly quieter.

In partnership with Ultra Electronics, QinetiQ designed and is testing a noise-reduction system for aircraft trim panels using both active and passive elements to connect the panels to the fuselage. The panels are a prime source for transmitting broadband noise, produced by airflow over the fuselage, into the cabin. Laboratory tests on synthetic trim panels indicate the new system can cut panel noise by at least 10 dB, or a factor of two. A full flight demonstration is planned for early 2004.

Under the MOU, QinetiQ employees will provide services at LHT's completion centers and MROs.
