Honeywell has obtained FAA certification for its new, low-cost
Class B Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) for light
jets and turboprops. Honeywell's motive is to provide a variety
of systems and prices to enable all types of aircraft to comply
with the approaching Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS)
requirements, explained Dan Barks, director of marketing for the
company's business, regional and general aviation avionics business.
The KGP 860 comes in at $12,500 list price and fits between the
Class B KGP 560 system designed for piston aircraft and the more
expensive Class A Mark VI and Mark VIII EGPWS systems for turboprops
and light jets.
Although classified as Class B, the KGP 860 provides functionality
beyond the Class B FAA TAWS certification minimum. It includes
alerting modes for excessive descent rate, altitude loss after
takeoff, unsafe terrain clearance, aircraft gear and flap configuration,
above-field altitude callouts and excessive bank angle alerting.
