Boeing 747 Classic Gains EFIS, Courtesy of Jet Aviation

Bringing modern avionics to an older-generation airliner, Jet Aviation has just installed the first electronic flight instrument system (EFIS) into a Boeing 747 Classic, complete with a high-resolution, 6 x 8 in wide-angle, active-matrix liquid-crystal display. The EFIS, supplied by Astronics Corporation of America, replaces electro-mechanical flight instruments and provides functions of primary flight and navigation that brings functionality associated with the current generation 747-400. The displays, accepting digital and existing synchro and analog inputs, are capable of receiving and processing FMS, INAS/ADIRU, TCAS, TAWS/EGPWS, navigation radios, air data, radio altimeter systems, weather, traffic and terrain systems. Working with JRG Design Inc over the period of a year, Jet Aviation designed, engineered and certified the EFIS integration and the more than 300 interfaces to achieve Supplemental Type Certification.
